So Why is Spiritual Health Important?

This is the eighth installment of our eight part series on holistic health.

In your pursuit of holistic health, it is vital that all aspects of your life are in harmony with your personal values. This is known as spiritual health, which is one of the eight dimensions of health and wellness.

Without a clear purpose, day-to-day actions can feel aimless and lack meaning. If this sounds like you, one effective way to combat that feeling is by developing a personal mission statement. In this post, we’ll explore how you can strengthen your spiritual health by aligning your values and living in accordance with them.

Identifying Your Core Values

To get started, make a list of 5-10 values that you aspire to embody. Maybe you’re a person who values honesty, resilience, or hard work. Or maybe you put compassion and gratitude above all else.

Once you have your brainstormed list, choose two or three values that resonate with you the most. Remember, specificity is key here, as the next step is to delve into these values and understand how to embody them more effectively.

Elaborating on Chosen Values

Once you’ve identified two or three key values, it's time to reflect on how you plan to embody them. Take a few moments to write out clear and concise statements for each value.

For example, if you have selected honesty, you may commit to always speaking truthfully and with integrity, both in your personal relationships and in your professional life. If resilience is one of your chosen values, you might pledge to persist in the face of challenges, embracing setbacks as opportunities for growth.

Think about how these values have played a role in your life in the past, and how you plan to embody them in the future. Don’t be afraid to write from the heart - this is your personal mission statement, so what’s most important is that it’s meaningful to YOU!

Crafting Your Personal Mission Statement

Now that you have a clear understanding of your chosen values and how you plan to embrace them, it's time to draft your personal mission statement.

This statement should encapsulate the values that are most important to you so that it can serve as guidance for your everyday actions. It may take a few iterations to get it right, but don't be discouraged! The key is to keep it concise, meaningful, and authentic to who you are.

For example, a personal mission statement could be: "I am committed to embodying honesty and resilience in all aspects of my life, fostering deep connections, and continuously striving for personal and professional growth."

Daily Revisiting and Accountability

Once you have crafted your personal mission statement, it is crucial to revisit it daily. By doing so, you remind yourself of your values and keep your spiritual health top of mind.

Additionally, regularly reviewing your list of values can help you gauge your actions and make necessary adjustments to stay on track. You may choose to incorporate this practice into your morning or evening routine, as a way of establishing a habit that reinforces your commitment to living in accordance with your personal values.

Aligning your actions with your personal values is a way to integrate meaning and purpose into every aspect of your life. Develop your personal mission statement, regularly revisit it, and embody the values you hold dear. By doing so, you pave the way for a deeper sense of fulfillment, growth, and overall well-being!
